Where are Maine Coons Mostly Found?

Maine Coon cats are native to Maine, where they are the official state cat. They are also found along the Canadian border.

What are Maine Coons Known For?

Maine Coon cats are known for being large, friendly, and affectionate, and are sometimes called "gentle giants". They are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, with males weighing up to 18 pounds and females weighing between 3.5–5.5 kilograms. Maine Coons can also grow to be over four feet long, including their tail. They have muscular builds, broad chests, and long, luxurious coats that come in many colors and patterns. Maine Coons often have a neck ruff and bushy tails, and their dense fur helps them survive in cold climates.

Who Created Maine Coons?

The Maine Coon is believed to be a native of Maine and the only longhaired domestic cat breed native to the United States. Most breeders think the breed originated in the 1700s when short-haired domestic cats mated with long-haired cats brought to America by European sailors. These long-haired cats may have been Angora types brought by New England seamen or longhairs brought by the Vikings. Genetic testing suggests that Maine Coons are descendants of the Norwegian Forest cat and an extinct domestic breed, possibly Viking.

Spread Love, Not Hate!

At ApotheCattery we follow STRICT guidelines and procedures as well as keep very clear pedigrees showing our kittens are never paired with other mates or breeds. All lines are traceable! They are raised in completely different nurseries and completely separated in our home at all times. On that note, there are some unprofessional people who are slandering elite catteries for having non traditional. We do not spread hate or discriminate against these loving and gorgeous kittens. All our clientele have different preferences in their kitten and we are here to meet all their standards...not other breeders standards. We meet TICA and CFA standards with both and that is all we care about! It cost zero dollars to be a kind person.
